First in-person meeting between leaders since April 28th election
Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump Tuesday in Washington.
Carney will be watched closely by Canadians infuriated by Trump and by an anxious business community looking for tariff relief.
In his first news conference since the election, Carney said on Friday that his government will fight to get the best deal for Canada. Carney mentioned that he was expecting constructive, but difficult, discussions with President Trump.
In an interview on Sunday with NBC, Trump reiterated that he would continue discussions around Canada becoming the 51st state, adding that he would subsidize Canada to the tune of $200-billion a year.
