Volunteer Appreciation Day: Meg Dolynsky - Socks for Change

When Meg Dolynsky first connected with Socks for Change, she expected to offer technical support. What she didn’t expect was how quickly the work would reshape her understanding of need in the Niagara region.

Dolynsky volunteers her time managing the charity’s website and social media, helping amplify a mission that focuses on something many people overlook: socks. She became involved after being referred to the organization to help with its digital presence, but says meeting founder Sam Bao made the decision to volunteer an easy one. His commitment, she says, is unmistakable - and contagious.

As colder weather arrived, the scope of the problem became clearer. Requests for socks began pouring in from schools and community services, revealing a hidden reality for thousands of Niagara residents. Dolynsky notes that nearly 70,000 people in the region live in poverty despite having housing, often forced to choose between essentials like food and winter clothing. Children, in particular, are frequently affected.

Socks for Change works to bridge that gap by providing warmth to people who might otherwise go without. The organization remains small, largely powered by its founder and fewer than a half-dozen volunteers, making every hour of help and every donation count.

Dolynsky began volunteering in September 2025 and hasn’t looked back. She says the simplicity of the charity is what makes it powerful, a small contribution can create immediate, tangible impact.

For those considering getting involved, her message is straightforward: you don’t need a lot of time or money to make a meaningful difference - just the willingness to help.
