SIU clears Niagara Parks Police officer in connection to April incident

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Niagara Parks Police officer as a result of investigation.

On the evening of April 15, Niagara Parks Police received a report of a man on the water side of the retaining wall near the Horseshoe Falls.

An officer arrived and urged the man to return to safety, but the man did not respond.

Instead, he moved toward a solid rock platform. A civilian attempted to pull him to safety from over the retaining wall but was unable to reach.

The officer and civilian followed the man from their side of the wall, watching as he sat on the platform before sliding into the water and going over the falls.

The man is presumed dead. His body has not been recovered and his identity remains unknown.

Because the man had brief contact with an officer prior to his fall, the Special Investigations Unit was notified.
