Fraud scams on the rise in Niagara

High-pressure tactics used to impersonate officials

Fraud is on the rise in Niagara, and local police are urging residents to stay alert.

Criminals are getting smarter, using believable scripts and high-pressure tactics to impersonate bank staff, government officials, and even loved ones. Common scams include calls pretending to be from the Canada Revenue Agency, bank investigator hoaxes, and the so-called "grandparent scam."

Remember: real officials will never ask you to withdraw large sums of cash, buy Apple Pay or gift cards, or use Bitcoin machines. They won’t tell you to keep secrets from your bank either.

If something feels off — it probably is. Report suspicious encounters to Niagara Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre right away.
