Detectives still investigating death of Livia Beirnes 15 years later

Detectives are making an appeal for information to the public in connection to an unsolved murder 15 years ago.

This week marked the 15-year anniversary of the murder of 76-year-old Livia Beirnes, after fire crews were called to her home on Oakwood Avenue in St. Catharines, and found her tied up in the basement during the blaze. She died the following day in hospital.

Her death is being investigated as a homicide. Detectives determined that Mrs. Beirnes had been bound by zip ties, “Ty-Rap Cable Tie” brand, which at the time were not commonly sold in retail stores. It is believed the suspect brought the zip ties with them to the scene.

Police say to this day her murder is still being investigated, and believe someone may have information that will play a key role in making an arrest.
