Niagara Region Public Health has confirmed its first positive case of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes this year. The infected insects were collected in Welland, prompting a reminder for all residents to take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
West Nile Virus is transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches. In rare cases, it may lead to serious complications like meningitis, especially in older adults or individuals with weakened immune systems.
At this time, there have been no human cases reported in Niagara in 2025.
