What's Good in Niagara? Ironbacks baseball team to highlight local talent

Ironbacks are the first Canadian team in New York-based Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League,

Summer collegiate baseball is coming to the Niagara Region.

The Niagara Ironbacks will take to the field for the first time this week, ahead of their home opener at George Taylor Field in St. Catharines this weekend.

Owner Mal Romanin says this team is full of guys that are hungry to get a shot at professional baseball.

The Ironbacks will compete in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, which is based out of New York State - making Niagara the first Canadian team in the league.

Romanin says with that, they want to highlight local, Canadian talent.

The team will play 46 games in 60 days, helping players adjust to a professional schedule. Players will also use wooden bats like they would in professional leagues, as opposed to the metal bats used in the NCAA.

In its 10-year history, the PGCBL has produced 38 major leaguers.

Tickets for the Ironbacks are available at Ironbacks.ca. Anyone looking to volunteer for the team is also urged to reach out to Romanin through the team website.
